New technology has changed the way we teach and learn
(Doyle, 2011; Safar & AlKhezzi, 2013). Through the use of new teaching and
learning tools, there are now almost limitless ways for educators to reach
their students and for those students to take in and practice this material.
Information and communication technology has made it possible for students to
study very complex topics on their phones. New ways of conducting classes have
made it possible to create blended classrooms that give greater opportunities
for students to learn at times that work best for them while still being able
to require a physical presence and maintain accountability. Lastly, the very
nature of the presentation of this material is changing and allowing for
adaptability to meet the specific needs of students. What a wonderful time to
be an educator!
A few last thoughts on this subject. A&P is a very
difficult and time-consuming subject. First year A&P is considered the
entry-level part of what will be a life-long use of this material in the health
sciences. The better a student is able to take in and process this subject on
their first year, the greater likelihood they will be able to apply this
material when they are taking advanced classes. As educators, it is, therefore,
our responsibility to ensure that the highest level of instruction and
retention is provided to our students. The new and evolving uses of technology
are truly awe-inspiring. As an educator, I have a tremendous arsenal of tools
at my disposal for teaching and students now have just as many ways to learn
that match their specific learning styles. When I was an undergraduate, I never
could have dreamed of holding an entire anatomy atlas in the palm of my hand.
Today, this ability is commonplace.
Therefore, teachers, take advantage of all of these new
methods to reach and teach your students. Students, A&P will never be easy.
I wish this was not the case, but it is. However, there are many ways you can
learn anatomy and physiology. Take advantage of these ways that I have listed
above. Believe me, you will be glad that you did.
